Pitfall! was originally created by Activision in 1982 and was the second best-selling game for the Atari 2600. Now you can play this classic hit on your android and iOS devices.

The intro credits to the game pay homage to the games original 8-bit awesomeness, but, a little to our chagrin, the actual game itself uses more updated graphics. While we miss the 8-bit format of Pitfall!'s glory days, we like the opportunity to play the game in this format.

So here's a basic overview of how the game works. You play as Pitfall Harry as he runs to escape the volcano. Pitfall Harry runs on his own, but you control when he jumps, ducks, uses his whip and so on.

We would go into more detail, but it's just so much more fun to play it yourself.

It's pretty fast-paced, and a lot of fun. We definitely suggest it as your new super addictive app that consumes just a little too much of your time.

Pitfall is available for free on iTunes HERE and on Google play HERE.

Every week we review a new app we think you should check out, to see previous App of the Week selections, click here.

I miss the olden days when the main character of a videogame didn't have to carry a gun in order to be considered cool. These days all they care about is graphics and violence, back then you had to use your imagination and it didn't matter if the game was "hard core", it could be about anything and it could still be fun. It's even hard to believe gamers don't even know who MegaMan is anymore when it seems like only yesterday everyone who owned a Nintendo was lined up to buy the sixth game. Gaming may have lost it's original charm, but i'm glad apps and Xbox Live Arcade still keeps these classics available. Hopefully the days of originality in gaming will return, better graphics might be included but I hope to see a break from the shooting and online war games and have other genres favored among the in-crowd of gamers.
