When Todd Lawson thinks back to his college days at Ohio State University, the Perkins resident remembers the massive tailgating parties before the Buckeyes football games.
Back then a tradition of sorts was called Hineygate, where massive parties would kickoff the scarlet and gray celebrations with local band the Danger Brothers behind the Varsity Club in Columbus.
Recently, when Lawson took in a game at The Shoe, he reminisced about those days gone by. That’s when a spark of an idea ignited, an idea that is now being called Huron Hineygate, which is scheduled to feature the Danger Brothers and take place Nov. 17 at the Mesenburg Creative Catering Hall.
“We decided to bring it up north and make some money for the Ohio State University Erie County Alumni Club,” said Lawson, who teaches technology at EHOVE Career Center. “We’re just trying to make some money for the students who get scholarships from the group. It’s an away game. We thought we’d put the games on the big screen and bring the band up north here.”
Somebody who not only remembers the legendary Hineygate parties, but was excited to stage a local event in their honor, was Ohio State University Erie County Alumni Club President Daniel Frederick, who now calls Milan home.
“The Erie County Club traditionally has game-watch parties for our Erie County membership,” Frederick said. “This fit right into our normal activities that we would do. It has an opportunity to attract quite a few more people and then the organizers have generously offered to support our scholarship fund with proceeds to the event, so that’s beneficial to the club.”
Currently the hope is the roughly 300-member Ohio State University Erie County Alumni Club will be joined by other Buckeye fans to pack Mesenburg Creative Catering Hall. Naturally, all involved are thinking ahead about turning Huron Hineygate into an annual affair.
“We want to make Mesenburg a place we can bring some bands in for some fundraising events,” Lawson said. “But this first one we’re doing for the future Buckeyes.”
The first Huron Hineygate featuring the Danger Brothers takes place Nov. 17 at the Mesenburg Creative Catering Hall, 545 Cleveland Road West, Huron. Doors open at 11 a.m., band starts at 12:30 p.m. and Ohio State vs. Wisconsin kicks off at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 with free hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. A raffle of OSU items is also planned.
