For those unfamiliar with the jewelry business, a trunk show sounds like, well, either a mafia euphemism or a special elephant event.

The truth is the industry term refers to jewelry vendors presenting merchandise directly to store owners or select customers. It’s the latter that James A. Bertsch Jewelers is hoping to attract with its first Holiday Celebration taking place from 6-9 p.m. Dec. 12 in downtown Sandusky.

In fact, James A. Bertsch Jewelers owner Michelle Bertsch-Herold said the idea about the special event is exclusive one-stop shopping. Funcoast.com talked to Bertsch-Herold about the pre-Christmas event.

What exactly is the Holiday Celebration?
The Holiday Celebration is a trunk show that I’m having. I have a vendor coming in and giving awesome pricing on the jewelry. We’ll have the Firelands quartet playing. I also have invited Marcell Clothing for Women, which is a boutique from the Westlake area. They’re going to be using the storefront next door. They’ll have their holiday goods. They’ll be open until 7 p.m. Also, Erik’s Clothing is also going to be open for the event. So the idea is you can get your holiday gifts.

Tell us more about this clandestine sounding trunk sale.
It’s a gentleman who brings his line in. We lay it all out and people can buy how we would buy. He does diamonds and colored gemstones. So it’s a full line of necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings, Really, it’s anything you’d see in jewelry store.

Has James A. Bertsch Jewelers ever hosted a Holiday Celebration before?
No, this is the first year we’re going to try it. I wanted to do something different than flyers this year. I just kind of stepped out of the box to try to see what will happen now. This is kind of a little bit more personal event. We’re going to have hors d'oeuvres, champagne and fun things.

It really just sounds like the perfect specialized shopping event for the holiday season.
That’s what I’m trying to do, and that’s why I added the ladies boutique. It’s just everything is boom-boom-boom right on the corner. You can come and shop for jewelry, you can come and shop for ladies clothing and your men’s apparel.
