Each child must be escorted by an adult and will be put in a small birding team. The teams will then observe the area and count all the birds they see or hear.

The children will be instructed on how to use binoculars before they go out and can either bring their own or borrow some from the Friends of Magee Marsh.

Teams are expected to be outside for approximately 90 minutes, so it is advised to dress accordingly for the weather. After counting the birds in the area the teams will be invited to a complimentary pizza lunch where live birds from Back to the Wild will be on display.

The team that spots the most birds will receive a prize and all participants will receive a certificate recognizing their bird expertise.

Friends of Magee Marsh has a variety of other kid friendly activities designed to teach children about nature.

Some of these activities include Bald Eagle Day, a Butterfly Identification Workshop, Lake Erie Waterfowlers Festival and Boo at the Boardwalk.

Friends of Magee Marsh are hosting their annual Christmas Bird Count from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, January 12 at the Magee Marsh Bird Center, 13229 W. Ohio 2 in Oak Harbor.
