Stop by a wine tasting in Port Clinton

If the main character in the 2004 vino-centered film “Sideways” was going to be visiting Port Clinton this weekend, odds are he’d be taking in the De Vine Winter Wine Experience at Slater’s Madison Pub.

“It’s really a good thing for anyone who wants to expand their wine knowledge, wants to learn about wine,” said Slater’s Madison Pub Owner/Manager Aimee Slater-West. “And anyone who is well versed, it’s good for them as well because they get to taste something new. The nice thing about having these is you can then go to the store and buy that bottle because you know you’ve tried it before without having to take a risk or a gamble.”

The second-annual De Vine Winter Wine Experience features a handful of wines from The Firelands Winery and Specialty Wine Company. There are four – Grillo, Pinot Grigio, Nero d’Avola and Cabernet Sauvignon – that cater to more of an Italian theme with Marchese Montefusco being the brand name. Also available is Firelands’ raspberry Riesling champagne.

“We’ve had a few private wine tastings for private groups that turned out so well and everyone was so pleased that I thought I’d like to do a more public event and bring people together over some good food and some good wine,” Slater-West said. “Everybody has been cooped up so this seems like the perfect time to do it. It’s for fun because our wintertime is terrible. Wine turns wintertime into fun time. It’s nice that people can get out and see each other and spend some time socializing.”

Last year’s De Vine Winter Wine Experience event sold out with 25 folks taking in the evening. Slater is hopeful for a repeat at the Port Clinton venue, which over the past year or so has expanded its events to include Wednesday night’s wine, homemade pasta and jazz as well as Sunday evening’s acoustic coffee house affairs.

The only real question is whether a local establishment with pub in its name is going against type and offering too much wine. Slater disagreed. She pointed out, “A pub is a public house. So you might not think wine would be served at a pub but really we’re an American pub. Everything is served at Slater’s.”

The De Vine Winter Wine Experience takes place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Slater’s Madison Pub, 111 Madison St., Port Clinton. Each participant receives a taste of five wines. Ticket price includes an hors d’oeuvre buffet that compliments each wine selected. Tickets are $23. You must be 21. Slaters Madison Street Pub is located at 111 Madison St. in Port Clinton.
