Last year all the proceeds from the event went to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. In it’s second year, organizers of the event decided to try something different.

“This year we decided to make a bigger splash locally, so we are donating all the proceeds to help fight cancer in our direct community,” said Juanita Mills-Persely, organizer of the fundraiser and PC Seniors member. “We have many people locally who are directly effected by cancer, so we thought this would be great opportunity to help them.”

: Cupcakes for the Cure Competition
WHEN: 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 11
WHERE: Moose Lodge 1610, 1105 W. Lakeshore Drive, Port Clinton
COST: $3 general admission, $5 entrance fee
INFO: 419-341-1080

Having lost a husband and a sister to cancer, Mills-Persely knows how beneficial this support can be to the local community.

“With the funds raised we are going to purchase gas cards for people who can not afford to get to the doctor, so they can get proper treatment,” Mills-Persely said. “Some of the money will also go towards women’s healthcare and ensuring women are getting mammograms, even if they do not have health insurance.”

Money will be raised by having participants submit their best cupcakes. Participants will pay a $5 entrance fee and then submit two-dozen of their best cupcakes.

There will be a junior and adult division and the top three best cupcakes in each division will win a prize.

“We will have a panel of judges who will taste each of the submissions and choose the winners,” Mills-Persely said. “The cupcakes will then be packaged into containers of six and auctioned off to raise additional funds.”

Attendees can taste test each cupcake before bidding on the cupcakes they want. There is no limit on how much you can buy the cupcakes for and some people have spent as much as $30 on a package of cupcakes in the past.

There will also be a silent auction where a fiesta package will be auctioned off, as well as a fish bowl auction.

For the fish bowl auction items like gift cards and tickets will be auctioned off.

“We will also have a golf package raffled off that is valued at $1,000,” Mills-Persely said. “The package will include spectator tickets to the Bridgestone Invitational and other major golf events in Ohio, as well as free rounds of golf at courses like Sycamore Hills in Fremont.”

Tickets to the Ultimate Golf Package Raffle are $5 each or 3 for $10.

“With all these different events going on we hope to raise around $2,500 and hope everyone will come out and help us reach that goal,” Mills-Persely said. “So, come out and support your community and give to a very worthy cause that effects all of us.”

The competition will take place from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 at the Moose Lodge 1610, 1105 W. Lakeshore Drive in Port Clinton. For more information on the Cupcakes for the Cure Competition, call 419-341-1080.

Shouldn't the headline read, "Eat Cupcakes and Get Cancer?" It is a well-known fact that sugar feeds cancer. Just sayin'.
