On average around 40 to 50 different homes and businesses participate in the yard sale, giving shoppers an opportunity to buy a wide range of items.

Some of the items that are sold during the sale include furniture, island memorabilia and household items.

“Because there are so many homes and businesses that participate the chamber prints a map of all the places hosting yard sales,” Beckford said. “The map is always printed the Friday before the sale and passed out Friday evening.”

However, some places decide last minute to participate in the sale, so all yard sales may not be listed on the map.

Attracting many locals each year, the event is a shopper’s dream because they can go to a large amount of yard sales without driving hundreds of miles.

“People like to go to garage sales all day and sometimes they have to drive long distances to find sales,” Beckford said. “Our island is small, so you do not have to drive far to go to a lot of yard sales. You can hit a lot of sales in a short amount of time.”

The yard sale also prompts being green because it encourages people to recycle old items they do not want.

“It is a really fun event and you can find some really interesting items,” Beckford said. “So come find some great deals and explore the island.”

The chamber will be hosting the Island Wide Garage Sale from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, May 18 throughout the island. For more info go to www.putinbay.com.
