Jam of the Week: Soundgarden, 'Been Away Too Long'

Exactly 15 years after Soundgarden called it quits, the Seattle grunge act is back in action with new album “King Animal” and its lead single “Been Away Too Long.”

Moments into the hard-hitting track, singer Chris Cornell belts the apropos lines “Can’t go home, no I swear you never can/You can walk a million miles and get nowhere.”

After a decade and a half of forgettable solo material (sorry, a cover of MJ’s “Billie Jean” doesn’t cut it) and hit-or-miss Audioslave tunes, it’s nice to have Cornell and Soundgarden back again.

What’s amazing is the new track, as well as the entire album, eschews nostalgia. Clearly Cornell tried to make it on his own but it turns out he needs Kim Thayil’s guitar riffs to balance out his frontman wailing.
