Life around the area may be slowing down now that the tourist season is ending, but that means things at The Pump Bar & Grill are starting to get hot – including the music and the wings.
“It’s kind of a transitional phase right now,” said The Pump Bar & Grill owner Becki Stock. “This time of the year, we’re known for music but in the summer it’s not. We’re not on the water, so we don’t have the outside venue. We’ll get the Cedar Point traffic off the highway but most of that is coming in using the bathroom, getting food and heading out of town.
“This time of the year, people are coming to The Pump for music. We are still one of the few bars that offers bands. There aren’t too many that do anymore. Live music is kind of our selling point.”
Speaking of which, this Saturday evening The Wannabes will be playing at The Pump. The group, relatively new to the area, plays straight up rock ’n’ roll, which fits right into the motif of the venue.
“Having a wide variety of music – from country to hard rock to classic rock – is what we’re known for,” Stock said.
Something else The Pump is known for are its wings, which Stock described as being different from the chicken offerings at other venues.
“You can’t floss your teeth with these things,” Stock said. “They’re big and meaty. A lot of places you get them they’re like toothpicks. There’s no meat, and they’re overcooked. Here, our wings are great.”
As far as drinks, previously The Pump was known for its $1 bombs, but recently the focus has been shifted to the development of a Buckeye shot.
“It was in research and development,” laughed Stock. “Now, it’s in the implementation phase. It’s like a nutty shot. It’s delicious. It’s hard to describe.”
Overall, The Pump provides the area with a relaxed and comfortable vibe.
“You’re not on edge when you’re at The Pump,” Stock said. “We have people coming in to watch sporting events. We have seven big screen TVs that are topnotch. We have people come to eat, and people coming in for live music. We’re kind of marketed as a jack of all trades. We’re not really known for one thing, which isn’t a bad thing.”
