Christmas in July book talk with author Joanna Wilson
1701 Press author Joanna Wilson will be giving a book talk at the Ida Rupp Public Library in Port Clinton, Ohio on Thursday, July 22, at 7:00 PM as a part of Christmas in July. Ms. Wilson is the author of The Christmas TV Companion: A Guide to Cult Classics, Strange Specials and Outrageous Oddities and the forthcoming Tis the Season TV: the Encyclopedia of Christmas-Themed Episodes, Specials and Made-For-TV Movies (November 2010). She is a resident of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and a University of Toledo alumnus. Her book has already captured the attention of several respected authorities on the culture of television, such as Robert Thompson, Director, Bleier Center of Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University, Diane Werts of TVWorthWatching.com and Billy Ingram of TVParty.com.
A brief description of Ms. Wilson's first book follows:
The Christmas TV Companion is a non-fiction guide to unusual, overlooked and often charmingly bizarre Christmas-themed television episodes, specials and film releases. Drawing on genres and themes such as science fiction, the macabre, off-center animation, extraordinary musical performances and dark sentiments, the book compiles Christmas installments along with summaries and commentary. The book also offers a practical application. There are nine Make Your Own Marathon suggestions for readers to enhance their holiday viewing. These include additional cult TV listings, and a marathon of specials from the past that deserve a second chance at a wider audience.
Robert Thompson said of The Christmas TV Companion:
"In an engagingly amusing way, this book points out how versatile television has been in embracing, celebrating, satirizing, and abusing this single holiday."
Ms, Wilson is a hip, friendly and enthusiastic speaker who is incredibly knowledgeable about television history and the history of Christmas on TV. She can talk about any Christmas-themed television that exists--from South Park to Christmas episodes of Reba, and from the Johnny Cash Christmas Specials to A Christmas Story (and everything in between).
