March to Fort Meigs

Visit Fort Meigs on July 4th- 6th  and see where Ohio’s independence was secured during the War of 1812. Founding father John Adams declared that the Fourth of July “ought to be celebrated with parades, shows, games and sports … from one end of the continent to the other.” Experience a recreation of an 1813 Independence Day celebration at 2:00 p.m. on July 4th. An 18 cannon salute, toasts to the nation, and fife and drum music will fill the air. Military and camp life demonstrations, including hands-on activities for the kids, take place throughout the day.

Re-enactors portraying soldiers from the War of 1812 will camp on the old fort grounds and demonstrate the weapons and tactics of the early nineteenth century all weekend long.  Civilians attached to the army will demonstrate period trades and crafts. Kids can try their hand at hands-on activities including period games, rounders (an early form of baseball) and drilling with soldiers

The museum and fort are open from Noon until 5:00 p.m. on July 4th  and from 9:30 -5:00 p.m. on the 5th and 6th. Admission prices are Adults- $8, Students- $4, OHS Members- $1 and children five and under are free.

Fort Meigs, constructed during the War of 1812, was twice besieged by British troops in 1813. Both times the Americans withstood the sieges, repulsing British attempts to invade Ohio. Today, FortMeigs is the largest restored, wooden walled fort in America.

Fort Meigs, one of sixty sites operated by the Ohio Historical Society, is located one mile west of downtown Perrysburg on State Route 65. For more information call 800-283-8916 or visit on-line atwww.fortmeigs.org or www.ohiohistory.org
