Let's get bananas in Mid-April

4513509780.gif
So what are you up to, this fine mid-April day?

Working? Yeah, me too.

Making plans for the weekend?

Yeah! Me too!

But why wait ’til Friday to have fun? I mean, we have 366 days this year — but only 130 of those are technically “weekend” time...
And of those 130, we’ve already used 37 1/2!

I did the math, really. I factored Friday nights in. (And you thought my job was all fun and games. I’m doing MATH here, people.)

So anyway, it seems like we’re shortchanging ourselves if we wait for the 5 o’clock whistle to blow on Friday.

Let’s see what we can find to do.

Aha! Tonight — it’s a Put In Party! And you don’t even need to board a boat to get there. This soiree’s at Red Clay on the River in Vermilion, and if you think a mid-week island party is cool, wait’ll you hear who’s playing — blues maestro Colin Dussault! (Check out his youtube performance with Dan Akroyd sometime.)

And, because an island party isn’t complete without a grill-full-o’-food — Chef Ben is promising burgers, shish kabobs, plus “a few other surprizes.” Sounds like a great way to spend a Wednesday night to me!

Now on Thursday, what do you say we check out Trivia at I-5’s? I know a lot of basically useless stuff, why not win $50 for it?

What? You want an example? Umm, let’s see.

OK, do you know Donald Duck’s middle name? It’s Fauntleroy.

Do you know what fruit is reported to relieve hangovers, heartburn, PMS and the itch of mosquito bites? Bananas.

See. I told you. I’m full of these nuggets of nonsense.

Here’s another one. Do you know when National Newspaper Columnists Day is? It’s Friday. (Tell everyone you know!)

Now — on Friday (besides celebrating your favorite newspaper columnist) there’s a ton of other (slightly less important, but still fun) stuff to do: The Bob & Tom Comedy All-Stars at the State Theatre, bands everywhere you go, plus a Spring Beer Fling at Piccolo’s.

Decisions, decisions…

The comedy show sounds like a hoot, but I still haven’t seen Ball & Chain, who are playing at Brutus’ Downunder, and I really want to… I’ll bet I could fit the beer fling thing in too then.
My current favorite is Great Lakes Brewing Co.'s Holy Moses White Ale with a slice of orange in it — try it sometime, it’s tasty!

Saturday, we get 24 hours of official weekend time with more musical entertainment scheduled in the evening, but I don’t like to waste a minute of my Satur-DAY either.
To the mall, I say, where the Earth Day Extravangaza is going on.

See you there? It’s all about going green these days, you know.

And speaking of green, if I work it right, I think I can get to the Midnight Moon Metaphysical Shoppe (formerly Our Place by the Bay) for a Tarot card reading.

Remember that bag of money that was revealed in my tea leaves? Yeah well, so far that’s the only place it’s appeared. Maybe the Tarot cards can tell me more.

As for Sunday — Anything Can Happen. And it probably will as Ray Fogg’s “Anything Can Happen” series begins at the Round House on P-i-B! That’s right, the Whiskey Light is glowing, the Island Rock God is back and while I’m dying to work the lyrics of his funniest song — possible the funniest song ever — in somewhere here, I can’t figure out how to do it without curling the hair of grandmothers everywhere.

Let’s just say the song starts with the word “stanky” and is bawdy-to-slightly-raunchy.

Now there’s a word you don’t hear every day!

Bawdy.

OK then.

Speaking of every day, we’re off to a good start here, right?

No more waiting for the weekend to have fun!

We don't need no stinking sunshine!

Despite an afternoon of non-summer-like weather, those ready to give Mother Nature a nudge in the right direction did their best to get the season underway.

Danielle Peck to open for Josh Gracin

A few hours south of here is where a young Danielle Peck grew up with dreams of musical stardom.

Radiohead to rock Blossom

As far as which band is the coolest indie rock/alternative act in the world, there is little doubt that designation belongs to Radiohead, which last year released its latest studio effort "In Rainbows."

An update on Bill... and Ted

BillTed3.jpg

Even if you’ve never discussed this question with a friend, you’ve probably at least pondered it in your own head at some point: Whatever happened to Bill from “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure”?

You wanna rock?

You want action tonight? Don't need nothin' but a good time? Gotta get away from that same old same old? How about an appointment with Dr. Feelgood?

You, my friend, are in luck.

So what's new and fun to do around here?

Some funny business in Sandusky

It's not until Detroit comedian Jay Cooper admits he's never been to Cedar Point that the funnyman realizes maybe why he has found a career as a stand-up comedian.

The Early Bird gets the good times

Bird.jpg
For nearly two decades, the lonely days of winter have seemingly come to an end at the Village Pump, which every spring holds its "Early Bird Party." This year's soiree takes place from noon to late afternoon on April 12 at the popular Kelleys Island bar.

"We've been having this party for at least 15 years if not 20, and we do it as a little kickoff to the season to try to get everybody back to where we were at the end of last summer," said Village Pump owner Gary Finger. "I think everybody wants to shake their winter blues, so this is a time where everybody has like a reunion and sees how friends fared over the winter.
