Fine, everyone may be happy with the Pumpkins’ new single “The Celestrials,” a gentle affair that showcases Billy Corgan’s congenial side from the band’s new CD “Oceania,” but it’s the cacophonic “Quasar” that offers hope to diehard fans for the future.
To be fair, history shows us that a whiny Corgan produces the best Pumpkins material. “Today” and “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” come to mind. Well, that magic is back in “Quasar,” which seemingly turns the clock back to the band’s earlier days. If you’re thinking “Drown” you’re not too far off with clashing guitar sounds and a psychedelic vibe. Let’s just hope Corgan’s return to shoegazing doesn’t sink after “Oceania.”
