The Erie Metro Parks are trying to get local youth involved in the outdoors with exciting new activities aimed at making anyone a nature lover.
One of these activities includes a free kayaking class from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, September 23 at the Coupling MetroPark, Route 13 in Berlin Heights.
“The class is for young adults between the ages of 14 years old and 20 years old,” said Jess Henning, organizer of the event. “We will kayak down and up the Huron River.”
The class is for all levels and takes participants through safety requirements before they get on the river.
Some of the things they will learn include different strokes one can use when kayaking, learning how to exit the kayak and overall safety tips.
“We are not sure how far down the river we will go,” Henning said. “It will depend on the weather and the kids’ skill level.”
Erie Metro Parks is hoping to have other activities like this in the future and wants to start an adventure club for area youth.
At the event they will survey participants and ask them what other adventure activities they would be interested in participating in.
“We are going to be doing two other adventure outings in November and January and we need suggestions on what programs kids are interested in,” Henning said. “We want to know what young people want to learn about.”
Some other activities may include kayaking or canoeing on the lake, building shelters or hiking.
This class will be a test run to see if other programs like this will be successful.
“Come and tell us what you are interested in and kayak for free at the same time,” Henning said. “You do not need any experience to participate, you just need to be comfortable on the water and be open to having a good time.”
