“Coexist” the new abum from The xx has been getting a lot of attention since its release early last week, with overall amazing reviews from the likes of NPR, Pitchfork, Times Entertainment and Rolling Stone. So big surprise, we’re fans too, especially of track one, “Angels.”
While The xx first sucked me into their fan base with their song “Heart Skipped A Beat” from their debut album “xx.” A song which included, for lack of a better word, more than most of their other songs, I adore the extreme simplicity of “Angels.”
The xx has become know for the simplicity of their music, and “Angels,” along with the rest of “Coexist” takes this simplicity to another level their first album did not reach.
The simple guitar and use of only Romy Madley-Croft’s vocals are put together with great grace. However, my favorite part of this song has to be the percussion. Coming in about a third of the way through the song, the percussion keeps with the theme of simplicity and minimalism, but could still easily tell a story all on it’s own.
