Norwalk hosts the biggest 'jam finale' in town

More cowbell may not be one of the rules in Jamie Castle’s mind when it comes to programming the Norwalk Summer Concert Series, which ends its fourth season Aug. 24 at the Norwalk Reservoir Shelter No. 4, but the Castle Music Store owner does have a few guidelines for the popular event.
“The idea is just to have a good time, a clean time,” said Norwalk Summer Concert Series visionary Castle, who also owns Castle Music. “No riff-raff. No mosh pits. It’s literally just good bands, good music and good fun.”
The free 10-week summer series, which is sponsored by area businesses and organizations, began as a way for local bands to find an audience with Norwalk residents in a comfortable venue to celebrate the outdoors. Averaging anywhere between 300 and 600 people, the concerts attract a wide array of crowds.
“People come out because everybody has caught on,” said Norwalk resident and New London native Castle. “So really it’s word of mouth. Parents can relax and not worry about bringing their kids out because they can play in the grass, listen to the music and eat free popcorn. Plus, it’s beautiful scenery, right next to the water.”
Musically speaking, the series features cover bands playing everything from classic rock and pop to classic country and more. While the tunes never get too heavy, as in metal, it turns out that doesn’t mean audiences are against rocking out.
“Sometimes we get into some Led Zeppelin stuff and everybody seems to love it,” Castle said. “It always cracks me up because even the seniors, they dig it. They know what’s going on.”
What’s going on next for the Norwalk Summer Concert Series is its Grand Finale, which is something special that Castle dreamed up.
“Every year at the end of the summer I get selfish,” Castle said. “I invite back eight to 10 people who I feel were the top musicians during the series that year. And then I play drums. So we get them up on stage for the Grand Finale, which is an unrehearsed all-out jam session. We don’t practice and we don’t have a set list. It’s just a group of individual musicians who come together just to rock out, really.”
Castle said the upcoming jam session will include music ranging from old school Johnny Cash to The Beatles, The Eagles, Jackson Browne and more from local musicians Chris Castle (vocals, guitar,
harmonica, piano), Matt Kean (vocals, guitar), Tony Schaffer (vocals, piano, organ, sax, clarinet, bass), Noah Heyman (bass, guitar), Haley Heyman (vocals, tambourine), Cory Webb (percussion), Dan Fester (vocals, guitar), Scott Stiert (vocals, guitar) and Dan Robertson (vocals, guitar).
While the cowbell isn’t listed above, Castle promises the obligatory classic rock instrument won’t be forgotten.
“The cowbell may come out,” Castle said. “I don’t play the cowbell but I’m going to bring a guy who is going to play percussion. And if he feels like playing the cowbell, he’ll do it.”
That means we can scream for more cowbell, if needed?
Laughed Castle, “Absolutely.”
The Norwalk Summer Concert Series Grand Finale takes place at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Norwalk Reservoir Shelter No. 4 on Old State Road in Norwalk. Audience members are encouraged to bring a chair.
