The title track of The Walkmen’s latest effort “Heaven” finds the New York City, post-punk revivalist act successfully channeling old and new sounds into a modern anthem.
The jangly guitar melody has the decidedly garage rock gravitational pull of say The Strokes, while there’s a breezy feel of the mid-‘80s MTV generation (Simple Minds comes to, well, mind) during the “Oh, oh, oh, ohhh” vocals. Actually, the track would have fit perfectly on a John Hughes movie soundtrack. However, as engaging as “Heaven” may be, it won’t be the reason this quartet finally loses its largely underground tag.
