Chi-Town blue-collar rock act Empires has been bubbling as the next big thing for a few years, but now such talk may actually come to a boil with the outfit’s recently released sophomore effort CD “Garage Hymns,” which includes current single “We Lost Magic.”
Sure, on the surface the driving jangly guitar work smacks of The Strokes, but the bare-boned bar-rocker anthem-in-waiting keenly combines singer Sean Van Vleet’s coarse delivery with garage-rock-guitar swagger. Invariably, there’s no magic lost here, only the alluring charisma of a band on the rise.
