A Taste of Wine and Roses has become one of Huron’s most anticipated summer events over the past six years. So how do you make a great thing even better? You kick things up a notch. This year, Huron Chamber of Commerce and Barnes Nursery, event co-sponsors, have added an element of delicious to the mix – tapas. In addition to an already-stellar evening of sampling award-winning Ohio wines, the tapas – which means “small plates” in Spanish – will be creations by several well-known Huron chefs. Guests will receive tickets that can be used for a wide array of food, sips of the area’s award-winning wineries and premium, locally-roasted coffee from Storm Mountain Coffee Co. The gardens at the nursery will be in full summer color, and the huge white tent will be filled with vases of roses in rainbow hues sitting atop white linen tablecloths. To give you an idea of what to expect, a few luscious items being served are sea scallops with crab mango chutney, hickory smoked beef brisket, salmon topped with fresh-roasted pineapple and a salad topped with rose petals and champagne dressing. The unique menu is a collective effort between the folks at Angry Bull, Marconi’s, Mesenburg’s Creative Catering, The Kitchen’s Bounty and Storm Mountain Coffee Roasters. June happens to be Ohio Wine Month, and area wineries are making their mark in the U.S. wine industry. With each new vintage, they garner more and more awards. Samples – as well as bottled wine for sale – will be provided by Chageau Tebeau in Helena, Firelands Winery in Sandusky, Matus Winery in Wakeman, Mon Ami of Catawba Island and Paper Moon in Vermilion. A group of friends can reserve a table for eight with signage, and they’ll receive two bottles of wine and a mention in the program for $200. Individual tickets are $20/person (presale until June 20) and $25/person at the door, and are available for purchase at Barnes Nursery, 3511 Cleveland Road W. and the Huron Chamber of Commerce office, 509 Huron St., Huron. For more information, contact the Chamber at 419-433-5700.
