I just love finding these places that seem to have been around forever. Although this building has been here over fifty years, it has outlived the hotel and other businesses around it. Yes, it has a few nicks and scratches from many years of use, but personally I feel that they just add to the charm.
The minute you walk through the door, you’re greeted by a wall full of photos of friends and family. You know right away you’re in a family-friendly place. Just to your right, you’ll see breakfast being cooked right before your eyes, along with a bit of chatter with the cook. All the folks working there are smiling and helpful.
The breakfast menu consisted of specials of corned beef hash, eggs, toast, sausage gravy and biscuits, steak and eggs and pork chops and eggs. And you must absolutely try their famous home fries, which are known all over town. My order was so large that even after sharing half with my husband, I still couldn’t finish them.
There are 11 omelet choices. My husband tried the Western with no cheese – it was tasty and big enough for two. Toast and coffee are included. The breakfast sausage was very good, as well.
Hot cakes, French toast, rolls and cereal are always available on the menu. The lunch menu includes two homemade soups, about 20 sandwiches and four salads. Dinner includes a hamburger steak, ham steak, breaded veal, breaded fish, liver and onions and chicken breasts, and all of these come with potatoes, salad, rolls and coffee.
Although I didn’t have pie for breakfast, I’m told their homemade pies are simply the best. Since the current owners have been here over 30 years, it seems that everyone in Fremont knows them and they know everyone in Fremont. If you’re looking for a good old-fashioned breakfast, Whitey’s is your place. We really enjoyed the experience.
