You may call me un-American, unpatriotic or un, um, fun, but I've never been a fan of fireworks.
See, as a young child, I had sensitive ears. I suffered from terrible ear infections and couldn't stand loud noises. So as you can imagine, the Fourth of July was never my favorite holiday. While my family and friends were enjoying the sights and sounds of the town's fireworks display, I was crumpled up in the fetal position under a bed in an attempt to escape the ear-splitting sounds of those fireworks.
Yes, I know, my childhood was tough. Did I ever tell you about the time our pet goat kicked me? I'll save that for another day.
But as I got older and my eardrums became a tad more sophisticated, I came to tolerate fireworks, but I have to say that I still haven't truly learned to appreciate their beauty. Maybe in another 10 years.
If you're like me and are in bed when the big booms fill the sky, there's still plenty to do this week. From ships, bikes and skates, there's a little something for everyone. But remember, whatever you do, go out there and have fun!
FESTIVAL OF SHIPS, Friday, June 30 through Tuesday, July 4* Even if you're not a ship aficionado (or nerd, as I call them), you still can enjoy the beauty of the ships sailing our way. And as an added bonus, you can sing "Come Sail Away" as the ships dock. Or is that just something I do?
ROEDER HARLEY-DAVIDSON/SHIFTER'S BIKE NIGHTS, Friday, June 30, Shifter's Bar & Grill, 5316 Milan Road, Sandusky* Does your life feel empty now that Ohio Bike Week is over? Roeder is here to help fill that void.
JULY 4th FIREWORKS, Tuesday, July 4, Cedar Point Beach, Sandusky* If you love fireworks, this is the show to see. Or so I'm told.
OLD FASHIONED STARS AND STRIPES CELEBRATION, Tuesday, July 4, Washington Park, Sandusky* Celebrate the Fourth with your fellow Sanduskians -- the old-fashioned way. Whatever that means.
GOLDEN DRAGON ACROBATS, Saturday, July 1, Hoover Auditorium, Lakeside,* Acrobats: Much less scary than clowns.
