Well, it’s Valentine’s Day, ladies and gents. But there’s no need for ridiculous gifts, super-expensive jewelry and tons of chocolate. Instead, why don’t you try giving your special someone the gift of your time? Plan a romantic night on the town and do something you’ll both enjoy. There’s an improv comedy troupe in town, an evening with Elvis, plenty of theatre events, a night of dancing, great music and much more.
Church Basement Ladies — This new musical comedy features four distinct characters and their relationships as they organize the food and solve the problems of a rural Minnesota church about to undergo changes in 1965. The State has two showings, one at 2 p.m. and another at 7:30.
One Night with You: A Romantic Evening with Elvis — Bring your sweetheart to the Bellevue Society for the Arts and enjoy a night of cocktails, food and great music! Local favorite Walt Sanders and the Cadillac Band will perform two hours of tribute music to the one and only Elvis Presley. The dinner menu includes special items prepared especially by EHOVE Career Center’s Culinary Class, under the direction of Chef Michael Edwards.
Boston Marriage — Anna & Claire, two bantering, scheming “women of fashion,” have lived together on the fringes of upper-class society with Anna’s Scottish maid, Catherine. Anna has just become the mistress of a wealthy man, but soon finds out her problems aren’t magically solved: there’s an unexpected visitor and a gift of an emerald necklace that puts both the women’s futures at risk.
Get Up Texas — Local Christian rock band Get Up Texas will perform an all-ages show for everyone to enjoy at Truth Ministries in Port Clinton.
Movie Series: “On a Clear Day” — We just can’t pass up free movies. Honestly, there may not be a more cost-effective way to spend a Friday night! In “On a Clear Day,” Frank, who is recently jobless, decides to prove himself by swimming the English Channel. In this “wee Scottish film,” the manner in which this attempt to banish his inner demons influences his marriage, his relationship with his son, and his perception of himself leads to a tender ending. BAFTA Scotland awards for best film and best screenplay plus Irish award for best supporting actor and Sundance Film Festival nomination for Grand Jury Prize.
Allison Bankieris — Local teen country sensation Allison Bankieris is performing live at Lyman Harbor — and from what we hear, she’s someone you don’t want to miss. Already she’s recorded two songs (one of which she co-wrote), and is in the process of recording her debut album.
Handmade Paper Craft — If you’re a DIY type, you’re not going to want to miss this workshop at Osborn Park’s Frost Center. This is your chance to learn how to make handmade note cards and gift tags from recycled paper. But you’d better sign up soon — space is limited!
Wine & Chocolate Open House — There’s likely no better pair in the world than wine and chocolate. Bring your other half to experience fine wines, exquisite chocolates and fabulous desserts.
Valentine’s Dance — If you want to put the dancing shoes on and sweep your special someone off their feet, bring them to Sawmill Creek Resort. Here you can enjoy an elegant showcase from Black Tie Dance Studio, enjoy dinner, brush up on your dancing skills with a free lesson and then spend the rest of the evening on the dance floor.
The Bedrock Valentine’s Bash — Join the Ohiohustle.com and Soulstar for their V-Day bash at the Crowbar. There will be door prizes, giveaways and more!
“Under the Influence” Comedy & Improv — The ups and downs of love will be the theme when this acclaimed group takes the stage at Norwalk Main Street Theatre. Troupe members include Doug Wertz, Drew Traxler, Jeff Kilgore, Ryan Kiley and Mark Jordan. Some material may not be appropriate for children!
Hayes Lecture on the Presidency — If you’re a history or politics buff, you’ll want to head over to the Hayes Presidential Center for this discussion about the nation’s highest office. Dr. Edna G reene Medford, renowned specialist on 19th century African-American History, is the guest speaker.
