Belting out the jokes

Comedian Auggie Smith isn't afraid to take a stand.
Audiences attending the upcoming "The Bob and Tom Comedy All-Stars Show" scheduled for April 18 at the Sandusky State Theatre, better be ready for the outlandish and perhaps the insane from this funnyman.
"I have a very strong opinion, and it's anti-any sort of government regulation or people telling me what to do," said Smith, calling from Cincinnati. "The new cause I've taken up is I'm anti-seatbelt. I'm the world's only anti-seatbelt activist. And I'll stand by that."
Smith joked his issue is with the fact for many people the notion of wearing your seatbelt isn't for safety, it's so you won't get a ticket. He also talks about the idea of kids wearing seatbelts.
"Because seatbelts are very important, the government is looking out for your children's health," Smith said. "To that I say, really? Ever see a school bus? The only seatbelt there goes to the 50-year-old parolee driving the bus. He's strapped in like he's waiting for a lethal injection. Meanwhile, the kids are in the back flying around like lottery balls.
"I say no. They only tell us to put on the seatbelt to control you. That's all it is. That's right, I'm the only anti-seatbelt activist, and I think you should eat more salt."
A working comedian for more than 17 years, the Montana native said he's played all over Ohio but has yet to come to Sandusky, which all changes with this upcoming show.
"I don't think I've been to Sandusky, so this will be fulfilling a lot of dreams for me," Smith laughed.
"Everybody has heard of Sandusky. It's where Tommy Boy lived, and you got the amusement park. Damn right."
Smith, who for a few years has been a regular contributor to "The Bob and Tom Show" (heard on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Toledo radio station WIOT-FM 104.7 and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Cleveland radio station WMMS-FM 100.7), will be joined on stage by fellow comedians Kristi Lee, Donnie Baker, Ralph Harris, Nick Griffin and Patti Vasquez.
"That's a very strong show," Smith said. "I don't know if anybody has ever seen Nick Griffin before - and I mean everybody is good on the show - but he's one of the best stand ups. He alone would be worth it to see, but then when you add the rest of us, holy crap. It's a hell of a show."
Smith goes on to say every comedian attached to the upcoming "Bob and Tom Comedy All-Stars Show" is a headliner in their own right, which he believes makes this evening even more special.
"Everyone is different on this show, so there will be something for everyone," Smith said. "You get to see everybody doing their best stuff, their best show. I think you're going to like it because it's going to be a great mix."
He quickly added, "And if you can't enjoy this show, then maybe comedy isn't for you. That's what I'm trying to say."
