Here's to trying something new!

"You want to go where everybody knows your name..."
And really, who doesn't?
I mean Norm and Cliff didn't visit Cheers every day just for the beer, right?

Errr, I mean... let's start over.
We all have our favorite haunts and hang-outs and that's a good thing - they're where we go to connect with familiar faces, people who know our families, our pasts, our pets' names and who broke our heart in 17 places.
The beer's on the bar before we ask for it - hey, even Norm had to order (sorta!) - and the conversation might pick up where we left off yesterday or last month. Yep, there's a lot to be said for a place where everybody knows your name!
But maybe it's time to try something new. What's that Girl Scout song? "Make new friends but keep the old?" It's not like you can have too many friends, right?
What's that you say? "New" makes you nervous?
All right, we'll do this together. I'm going to start just down the street.
Road.
Highway.
Whatever.
For four years now, the closest watering hole to home has been the Bayside Tavern. Never heard of it? How about Third Base?
Does that sound familiar?
You know, the place on the corner of Route 6 and 269.
Same building, new and different name. And also a lot of new stuff going on there!
I'm seeing bands listed on the calendar every weekend, karaoke on Wednesdays, live music on Thursdays, taco night...
If any of this was going on before, I didn't know about it.
Yes, I drive past every day. Yes, we've ordered burgers and wing dings and pizza and made the occasional emergency beverage run through the drive-thru.
But hanging out there? Not so much.
Am I going to show up and belt out some karaoke tune tonight? I don't think so.
I doubt I'd make many new friends that way.
But taco night? Count me in, amigos!
So what are you going to do that's new?
Here's a suggestion - you're familiar with my friends at the East Side Cafe, right?
What's that? You're asking what's new about them?
You're right, they have been making great food (and friends) a long time.
And there's a cold one on the bar before I even ask for it.
But here's what is new: For the first time in forever, they're open on Sundays for brunch, 7 a.m.-1 p.m. - we went last weekend.
What's not new: Everything was delicious!
I mean, I think everything was, I couldn't stop eating the Deluxe Scrambled Eggs long enough to try it all.
I'm no food critic but I'll tell you, when a girl can't stop thinking about scrambled eggs days after eating them, those are some special eggs!
Fortunately, my husband can vouch for the rest of the offerings. He was able to sample all the other yummy stuff while I grilled the chef about the secret "deluxe" ingredients.
OK, the ingredients aren't really that big a secret, but you go. Try something new. You'll see what I mean.
Just be a friend and scoot out of the way if you see me headed for the eggs!

Oh and if you happen to run into Hillary, tell him I said, "NORM!"
What? You didn't know Hillary is Norm's real name?
See?
THAT'S why he always went to Cheers.
