Your "Girlfriend" probably enjoys this game. So does your "Mother." Pretty much every "Woman" loves Guitar Hero.

Some diehard fans get a "Bad Reputation" for playing too much - the most extreme of whom probably deserve to be "Institutionalized" - but the game has a simple message to its users that makes its popularity so understandable. That message is:

"Sweet Child O' Mine," "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight."

For those who don't know, everything in quotation marks in the previous three paragraphs is a song title from the setlist of Guitar Hero II. From now on, I "Surrender" - I will "Stop" using song titles from the game in this article. (I promise, those were the last two.)

The undeniable truth is, Guitar Hero has taken our nation by storm. Guitar Hero II already has sold more than 3.2 million copies, and Guitar Hero III - which was released just last month - sold more than 1.4 million copies in its first few weeks on the market.

It's like Harry Potter, only for people who prefer playing video games to reading.

A couple of local establishments are well aware of the game's popularity, which is why they're offering chances to play it on their TVs, letting you win prizes while doing so.

Daly's Pub on Columbus Avenue is hosting "The Ultimate Guitar Hero Contest" at 9:30 p.m. every Wednesday until the end of January. The grand prize is $200 cash.

And The Underground on Water Street is including Guitar Hero in its Bar Olympics for the first time, pairing the game with a couple of other classic sports (beer pong and flip cup) for its Dec. 28 extravaganza.

"We're going to set up a big screen - we might have two TVs for the competition," said Nick Woodruff, who helps handle booking for The Underground. "The finals are going to be on the big screen on the front stage, and we're going to pump music through our PA system, so everybody will be hearing it."

That means you, nameless North Coast resident, have the chance to belt out some guitar licks on the same PA system used in the last few months by national rocks acts such as Adema and Drowning Pool.

The winners will get prizes, and though Woodruff calls them "crappy prizes," trophies and drinks will be awarded, so they don't sound too bad.

The Guitar Hero Bar Olympics will begin at about 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 28, Woodruff said. The doors open at 9 p.m., with the first 30 people getting in free. Teams of three will need to register (for free) between 9-10 p.m.

The beer pong and flip cup events will take place first, with Guitar Hero capping off the evening. Woodruff said one team member will play head-to-head against someone from another team, but the deciding factor will be total points accumulated by a three-person team.

"This is the first time we've done Guitar Hero - it seems to be popular right now," Woodruff said. "... Basically, it's people having fun and competing for crappy prizes. People should come down and knock it out."

From the sound of it, for at least one night, that place is going to be a "Madhouse."

Justin tried, but he couldn't resist getting that one last song title in there. He's pathetic. He should be "Laid to Rest." E-mail him at hello@funcoast.com.Written by Justin Powell
