Jady Kurrent
0 commentsTogether for more than a quarter of a century, the Cleveland-based Jady Kurrent remains a popular cover band all across the Buckeye State.
"We're still playing music, and I don't see any of us getting out of it," said guitarist/keyboardist Buzz Harriel. "We considered that a few times when our 25th anniversary came by - we talked about how long this thing will go, and it seems to us that our audience just wouldn't let that happen. Even if we wanted to get out of it, we wouldn't be able to."
It sounds like being a member of Jady Kurrent is a pretty serious commitment.
"I think it's because of the music," Harriel said. "It's been ingrained in us since we were young children. It kept us off the street and out of trouble. It's in our system. So we just can't help it. We gotta play the music."
That music consists of party tunes that aim to get the blood pumping and the audience dancing. The quartet's repertoire is urban-based, with plenty of songs from the likes of Prince, Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige, Rhiannon, Fergie, Lil Bow Wow, Justin Timberlake and more.
However, Harriel said the act is also capable of kicking out some country (Brooks and Dunn) and even Southern rock (Lynyrd Skynyrd).
"It really depends on what type of situation we're in," Harriel said. "Last weekend we were at Put-in-Bay, and at a place like that you have people coming from all over from all different walks of life, so we can get away with playing ëSweet Home Alabama' and then turn right around and play some Nelly or Snoop Dogg or something. It all works in a place like that."
So what's the one cover song that truly epitomizes the spirit of Jady Kurrent?
"That's so hard to say because people lose their minds over quite a few songs," Harriel said. "But I'd say ëI Will Survive.' People just go nuts when we play it. It's such a chick song, so we can go crazy and we feel like we've been empowered for the night. They just go crazy when they hear that one."
Apparently Harriel said the North Coast in general goes crazy for Jady Kurrent. You can experience the madness at the band's upcoming June 16 show at Cabana Jacks, 202 Columbus Ave., Sandusky.
What's amazing is this cover band has lasted longer than most band relationships and even marriages.
"Yeah, so I hear," Harriel said, laughing. "I don't see an end to it. I really don't. I think it'll take a devastating illness to make this thing stop, where somebody is at the point where they can't physically do it anymore.
That'll be the only thing that will stop us."

The main character of Scrubs is named "J.D." That was a doozie of a season finale a few weeks ago. He and Elliot back together? Maybe. E-mail John at jbenson@funcoast.com.
