You voted it as having the Best Pizza during the Funcoast.com Reader's Choice Awards.

Now the "best pizza" shop in town is striving to make itself even better.

Cameo Pizza in Sandusky, family-owned since 1936, has undergone a complete renovation of the second floor, added a back patio for outdoor dining and increased its limited parking.

Previously just a private party room, the upstairs was used about 50 times a year, according to Matt Keech, president of Cameo Pizza Franchising Company. Now it will be open every day.

The five video games previously housed in Cameo's back room have been moved upstairs, along with four new games and a jukebox.

"Now the back room, instead of being a loud and noisy game room, offers a casual and quiet dining room experience," Keech said.

Seating in the back room will increase by eight.

"The biggest change is the upstairs. We did a total makeover and turned it into a family fun room," Keech said. "The room now has a Caribbean island theme, and (it) makes you feel like you're on an island."

In addition to the video games (Big Choice Crane, Ms. Pac-Man, The Simpsons, Hydro Thunder, Off Road Thunder, Mace, Carn Evil, Skins Game and Striker 1945), and the Venus CD Jukebox, Cameo's upstairs game room also includes two new high-definition plasma TVs, a high-definition projection TV and full-service restaurant capabilities.

"Now kids can play the games in a controlled environment, moms can observe the kids with full-service food operations, and dads can enjoy their favorite beverage while watching their favorite sports and hanging with the family," Keech said.

The opening of the second-floor game room in mid-June will add 50 additional seats for Cameo.

In addition to the changes upstairs, Cameo also added three new HD plasma TVs at the bar (a 58-inch and two 42-inch), and two new HD plasma TVs in the back dining room (50- and 42-inch).

"All hooked up with the cable system's HD digital boxes," Keech said, "makes it simply the best place in the area to watch your favorite sports."

Additionally, the back patio with seating for 50 will open in mid-June.

"There will be entertainment out there a handful of times during the summer," said Keech, noting the patio is also available for outdoor parties for all occasions.

The final new feature for Cameo, also available starting in mid-June, is the addition of a 16-spot parking lot area around the back of the Cameo.

"Our parking is very limited and sometimes people think we are full when we aren't," Keech said. "This will help us correct that image and also provide some safer parking options for family and kids."

Keech added there may be a few more changes on the horizon this summer, including menu changes and an Island Oasis machine for frozen cocktails.

"The Cameo is one of the area's best restaurants for the entire family," Keech said. "Upgrading the facility shows our customers that we care about their experience and want it to be the best it can be. Our customers deserve it."
