When we moved to Sandusky from Norwalk, one of my first concerns was to find an ice cream stand to replace our favorite H & B’s Hop. Of course, since it was December, nothing was open, and I let it go.

Until now! With the changing of winter to spring, all the wonderful seasonal restaurants are opening, and with the help of some in-the-know locals, I’ve found my ice cream stand of choice: Eats N’ Treats.

I call it an ice cream stand, but Eats N’ Treats is so much more. They serve pizza (rated the best takeout pizza of 2008 by the Sandusky Rotary Club), burgers, wings, sandwiches, and every little fried thing you can imagine, from Cauliflower to Mac & Cheese Bites ($2.95 each).

And the hamburgers are great — heavy on the condiments, with fresh, crunchy lettuce and red, ripe tomatoes.
The special burger is the Buckeye Burger ($3.50), two patties on a double decker bun, heavy with pickles, cheese, and Thousand Island dressing.

But not everything at Eats N’ Treats is the epitome of artery-clogging goodness. They offer salads and wraps as an alternative; the BLT wrap ($3.95) is particularly delicious, even if whoever made it managed to roll the covering paper into the middle of the wrap.

Once I removed that, the wrap was perfect, sporting plenty of bacon and mayo, with enough lettuce and tomato to offset the crisp, salty meat.

A lot of emphasis is placed on high quality ingredients, and it shows in the food.

The menu claims they use the more expensive vine-ripened tomatoes, and after testing out several sandwiches, I believe it. The extra burst of summer flavor in every bite is worth whatever they’re paying at the grocery store.

Like every good local stand, they serve Toft’s ice cream, along with a variety of sundaes, shakes, flurries, and smoothies.

The specialty sundaes are $2.95 for a small, $3.50 for a large, and let me tell you, they don’t skimp on the toppings. Halfway through his Turtle Sundae, my husband found a second layer of chocolate, butterscotch and pecans, and it was almost too much.

Almost, but not quite. My York Mint Flurrie ($2.95 small, $3.50 med, $5.50 lg) was cool and refreshing, even if it was made with Junior Mints, not peppermint patties.

We prefer to eat outside, squeezing every last bit of joy out of the newly nice weather, but there’s adequate indoor seating, as well.

The restaurant has a more permanent feel than many ice cream stands in the area — it appears to be built to last. I, for one, am very happy about that. There are quite a few things on the menu that I’d like to try!
