Time to be a Stooge

Watching grown men hit each other on the head, fall down and occasionally get a pie in the face sounds like something only 8-year-old boys would enjoy.
As we mature, we’re supposed to be into more sophisticated fare, like Shakespeare and Hawthorne, right?
Perhaps, but never discount the ability of Larry, Curly and Moe (and in some cases, brother Shemp) to make someone laugh, regardless of age.
“You know what, I wasn’t a big fan of the Three Stooges when I was growing up,” said Teresa LaFountain, co-owner of the Main Street Threatre in Norwalk. “But when I was watching their movie again now, I was laughing hysterically, thinking, ‘Why didn’t I used to like this more?’ ”
LaFountain is helping bring the three lovable goofs to the big screen this weekend for the first Classic Movie Day at the Main Street Theatre. Two of the Stooges’ short films — “Disorder in the Court” and “The Brideless Groom” — will be shown, as will a couple of classic cartoons, including one featuring Popeye.
Those interested in attending can come either at 3 or 6 p.m. Saturday. Both movies and both cartoons will be shown at each time. Tickets are $5, and that price includes a small popcorn and can of soda. To see just the movies, the cost is $2.
“This is the first time for the event, but it’s something we’re going to try to do regularly,” LaFountain said. “We’re going to have a Danny Kaye movie, ‘The Inspector General,’ in March. Basically, we’re trying to show some public domain movies so we don’t have to worry about getting the rights to show it. And if it goes well, we’re hoping to do it once a month.”
The public domain explanation is part of the reason why LaFountain picked the Three Stooges movies for the first event, but there’s more to it than that.
“We’ve had a lot of people request (the Three Stooges), believe it or not,” she said. “Several people asked us to bring those movies in, so we decided to do it. We figured it would be a fun family thing. People in their 40s or older can come, and they’ll remember seeing the Three Stooges from when they were children. And they can bring their kids and introduce them to the Three Stooges.”
Larry, Moe and Shemp star in “The Brideless Groom.” To inherit a fortune, Shemp must marry before six o’clock, but no girl will accept his proposal. When he finally finds someone, a lot of mayhem ensues.
In case you want a more … um, specific description of what kind of chaos the Stooges get into during the film, a couple of the imdb.com main “keywords” for the movie are “face slap” and “hit in the head with a rifle.”
In “Disorder in the Court,” Larry, Curly and Moe are witnesses at a trial where their friend, a dancer at a nightclub where they are musicians, is accused of murder. As can be expected, the Stooges disrupt the proceedings, but there’s a happy ending.
Skipping to the good part, the main imdb.com “keywords” for this one are “hammer,” “parrot,” “hose” and “shot in the butt.”
Come on — you know you can never be too old to enjoy watching someone get shot in the butt.
